Lynn Shiyayo

Lynn is a MS student and researcher in the Energy and Resources Group at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research lies at the intersection of transportation, climate, and equity where she has most recently collaborated on research that evaluates “the carbon intensity impacts of battery chemistry and energy mix on the production and use emissions of a range of commercially available zero emission vehicles”, where she quantifies the emission impacts that stem from the decarbonization of over 150 light and heavy duty electric and hydrogen vehicles.

Lynn brought her background in Earth and Environmental Sciences and Economics from Germany to Berkeley where she has introduced young scholars to the empirical cost and benefit estimates of climate policy as Graduate Student Instructor for Climate Change Economics (F21 & F22). She has also taught Food and the Environment (SP22) at UC Berkeley. As a first-generation scholar, her teaching philosophy is strongly rooted in gaining an understanding of her students’ individual frame of reference and providing students with the support, mentorship and empowerment needed to help them gain confidence, skills and to build a network that matches that of their legacy peers.

As an international scholar and researcher with work experience in Kenya, Germany and the USA, Lynn is also eager to contribute to research that investigates the upstream distributional impacts of transitions that specifically targets artisanal mining communities such as those in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and other regions within the African continent in addition to investigating air pollution exposure brought about by extraction and transportation sources where she presently lives in California.

Lynn was born in Kenya and raised in Ethiopia and Malawi. She is fluent in English and Swahili and speaks German at an intermediate level.
