Yet increasing evidence suggests that a number of these land deals have been delayed, abandoned, or cancelled. Through a situated historical and feminist analysis, this talk traces the unexpected trajectory of a high-profile agricultural land deal in coastal Tanzania signed by the national government and a foreign investor for commercial sugarcane production. Drawing on 18 months of ethnographic fieldwork, the talk highlights the importance of historical and gendered struggles over resources to understanding how land deals are made and remade over time and space. SPEAKER: Youjin Chung is Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Geography at Clark University. Her research draws from the political economy of development, historical and feminist political ecology, critical agrarian and food studies, and African studies to examine the relationship between gender, intersectionality, development, and socio-ecological change in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Tanzania.
