YOUJIN CHUNG – Colloquium

March 2, 2020 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm PST

THE ENERGY AND RESOURCES GROUP and THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, POLICY, AND MANAGEMENT PRESENT: SPEAKER: Youjin Chung DATE: Monday, March 2, 2020 TIME: 3:00-4:30pm PLACE: 101 Barker Hall TITLE: History, Gender, and the Politics of New Enclosures in Coastal Tanzania DESCRIPTION: Over the past decade, there has been a surge in large‐scale land acquisitions around the world. Yet increasing evidence suggests that a number of these land deals have been delayed, abandoned, or cancelled. Through a situated historical and feminist analysis, this talk traces the unexpected trajectory of a high-profile agricultural land deal in coastal Tanzania signed by the national government and a foreign investor for commercial sugarcane production. Drawing on 18 months of ethnographic fieldwork, the talk highlights the importance of historical and gendered struggles over resources to understanding how land deals are made and remade over time and space. SPEAKER: Youjin Chung is Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Geography at Clark University. Her research draws from the political economy of development, historical and feminist political ecology, critical agrarian and food studies, and African studies to examine the relationship between gender, intersectionality, development, and socio-ecological change in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Tanzania.
