LAURA SCHEWEL – Transportation Behavioral Data and Climate Change
February 5, 2020 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm PST
THE ENERGY AND RESOURCES GROUP FALL 2019 COLLOQUIUM SERIES PRESENTS:
SPEAKER: Laura Schewel
DATE: Wednesday, February 5, 2020
TIME: 4:00-5:30pm
PLACE: 126 Barrows
TITLE:
Transportation Behavioral Data and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:
Transportation is now the largest single-sector source of greenhouse gases in California, the US, and soon the world. The overwhelming challenge of combating these emissions is made harder by the fact that we know very little about transportation behavior due to the extreme difficulty of data collection. In this presentation, Laura Schewel will explore how the seeming mundane topic of transportation data collection techniques has evolved over the years, and how new approaches yield sometimes surprising new insights into transportation equity, the rise of driving-for-shopping, and the question of how urban density intersects with driving patterns.
SPEAKER:
Laura Schewel is co-founder and CEO of StreetLight Data, a transportation analytics provider. As CEO of StreetLight she has helped hundreds of transportation agencies, engineering firms, and private transportation companies put big data to work. Prior to founding StreetLight, Laura worked at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and Rocky Mountain Institute on vehicle electrification and other transportation sustainability topics. She has a bachelors in Literature and Environmental Engineering from Yale and has just completed her PhD in the Energy and Resources Group at UC Berkeley.
