FERNANDO PEREZ – Jupyter Meets the Earth: an Open, Collaborative Approach for Earth Data Science

November 13, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm PST

THE ENERGY AND RESOURCES GROUP FALL 2019 COLLOQUIUM SERIES PRESENTS: SPEAKER: FERNANDO PEREZ DATE: Wednesday, November 13, 2019 TIME: 4:00-5:30pm PLACE: 126 Barrows TITLE: Jupyter Meets the Earth: an Open, Collaborative Approach for Earth Data Science DESCRIPTION: Today’s scientific challenges require combining theory, simulations and data at an unprecedented scale and complexity. While this is beyond the skills of any individual scientist, an open and collaborative approach can give us both the extensible tools and the interdisciplinary teams we need. I have spent my career building such tools and communities around IPython, Jupyter and the scientific Python ecosystem – I will discuss these in the context of a new project where geoscience and climate questions match up with new software advances. I hope to engage both on the scientific and technical specifics, and on the viability of such open models in a traditional academic setting. SPEAKER: Fernando Pérez (@fperez_org) is an associate professor in Statistics at UC Berkeley who likes to build open source tools for humans to use computers as tools for thinking and collaborating, mostly in the scientific Python ecosystem (IPython, Jupyter & friends).
