THE ENERGY AND RESOURCES GROUP SPRING 2019 COLLOQUIUM SERIES PRESENTS: SPEAKER: Zeke Hausfather PhD Candidate Energy and Resources Group University of California, Berkeley DATE: Wednesday, March 20, 2019 TIME: 4:00-5:30pm PLACE: 126 Barrows TITLE: Understanding and Reconciling Different Estimates of Global Warming DESCRIPTION: Reconstructing past global temperatures is complicated by changes in instrumentation, measurement practices, spatial coverage, and other factors. This has led to a number of divergent estimates of the warming over the 20th and early 21st century, with particularly large differences around the WW2 era and over the past decade. This talk will assess different observational records, and look at independent ways to try and determine which are most accurately capturing changes in global temperatures of the surface, atmosphere, and oceans over the past century. BIO: Zeke is an energy systems analyst and data scientist with a strong interest in climate science and policy. He is currently the VP of Energy Science at Essess, Inc, an energy efficiency startup that develops vehicle mounted thermal imaging systems, a research scientist at Berkeley Earth, and the senior climate analyst at Project Drawdown. He was previously the chief scientist at C3 Energy and the cofounder and chief scientist of Efficiency 2.0, a behavior-based energy efficiency company. At ERG he plans to focus on better modeling climate impacts of energy system choices and improving observational estimates of global surface temperatures.
