DESCRIPTION: The vast majority of environmental scientists are dealing with the messes we have made of the planet in the past. This talk addresses an effort underway to reorient scientists working in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta toward the present and immediate future challenges of rapid, more uncertain environmental change. The Delta, now an Environmental Heritage Site, is critically important to California’s water system and the urban populations and agriculture it serves as well as to local wildlife, anadromous fish, and migratory birds. This is a climate change lesson from California still underway. The article being discussed can be found at https://escholarship.org/uc/item/40x3z74k , BIOGRAPHY: ERG Emeritus Prof. Norgaard earned a PhD in economics from the University of Chicago, joined the UC Berkeley faculty in 1970, and helped found the Energy and Resources Program. He served on a Pest Management Advisory Committee to President Nixon (1971-2), was the first elected president of the International Society for Ecological Economics (1997-2001, served the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (1993-1999) and on the 100-person Scoping Committee of the 5th IPCC Assessment (2009). He served on the ten-person State of California Delta Independent Science Board from 2010-2020. He is currently writing a book on American Economism.
