This talk will discuss what is known (and what is not) about the origins and development of that phenomenon between 1945 and 1981, examined against the background of the postwar decades’ intra-party ideological conflict, national party realignment, social upheaval, and political polarization. It will then introduce my recent studies in the field: on air pollution politics in the Kennedy years; on the development of conservative business anti-environmental discourse in the 1970s; and on the conservative reaction to Earth Day  -including some newly-discovered ties to Berkeley. BIOGRAPHY:  Adam Orford is a Ph.D. candidate at ERG, where he has studied environmental and energy policy and politics. Upon graduation he will join the faculty of the University of Georgia School of Law. Prior to returning to academia he practiced environmental law.
